Attendance
All students are expected to attend all assigned classes every day. Continued unexcused tardies and/or skipping classes are considered a violation of compulsory attendance and will result in disciplinary action. Unexcused tardies include any late arrival when the student fails to bring a doctor or dentist note upon arriving. Those who are repeatedly absent or tardy will be disciplined individually. All requests for early dismissals will be verified with the parents. Students and parents will be expected to follow attendance and early dismissal procedures without exception during the entire school year. Students must come to class prepared with supplies and an alert mental attitude. The teacher, not the bell, begins and ends each class. The HCPS Code of Conduct Section 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D will be followed accordingly.
1. Absences - Notifications
All class absences will appear on student report cards. Under normal conditions, for each absence from school, either an administrator or someone designated by the principal will call the home of the absent student. This may also apply to individual class absences. When a student accumulates ten (10) unexcused tardies a referral shall be made to the school social worker, as well as other disciplinary action.
2. Make-Up Work It is the student’s responsibility to make up work that is lost as a result of absences from class. Each student must check with each teacher to determine the nature of the work that can be made up. Students MUST make arrangements with the teacher within the predetermined timeframe. The timeframe to make up work is the time missed plus one day. The teacher is not required to constantly remind students to turn in work, and is not required to accept it after the specified length of time.
3. Late Arrival - Early Dismissal
Once a student arrives on School property, he/she may not leave without administrative permission prior to the end of the regularly scheduled day. All students are expected to arrive at school and to all classes on time. Students who are tardy to school (after 9:00 a.m.) are required to report to the Attendance Office. Once a student accumulates 4 tardies to school, a consequence will be assigned. Continued tardies to school will result in additional disciplinary consequences. The regular dismissal time for students is 3:55 p.m. Students with early dismissals must present a note from parent/guardian stating time and reason for early dismissal to the attendance office prior to dismissal time. The Attendance office will verify dismissal with parent/guardian. The student must sign out before leaving school. High school students, with written authorization from a parent or legal guardian, may sign themselves out. A parent or legal guardian may come to the attendance office and request the release of his/her child. The student is called to the Attendance office to meet the parent and his/her parent signs a record of the early dismissal. Students may not leave campus for any reason without following the outlined procedures.
4. Tardies to Class
All students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the tardy bell rings. Teachers will document the number of student tardies to class and follow the appropriate consequence assignment.
“Clean sweeps” will be conducted EVERYDAY, EVERY TRANSITION. Any student tardy to class will be directed to a designated area. Metal detector scans can be conducted. The following consequences will be assigned for “Clean Sweeps”, Tardies to class, and Tardies to School:
1st - 3rd : Conference with student/parent contact
4th: After School detention
5th: Afterschool detention
6th: 1 day RESET
7th 2 days RESET
8th: 1 day RESET-parent conference with administrator
9th 2 days RESET-parent conference with principal
5. Truancy
Truancy is an unacceptable behavior. When an absence occurs for which neither the parent nor the school had prior knowledge, then the student is considered truant. A written statement by a physician may be required when a student misses more than 10 days during the school year because of illness. According to HCPS Code of Student Conduct section 1C, school social workers and school resource officers perform Truancy sweeps routinely. The school authorities will notify parents of this truancy. When truancy occurs, the corrective action, which will be taken, may include:
a) Notification of Parent
b) Alternative education placement
c) Meeting with parent, student, and assistant principal
d) Meeting with principal or designee, social worker, parents and student- Referral to Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
6. Absences and Excuses A written excuse must be presented to the attendance office within 24 hours of absence from the parent or guardian when a student is absent or tardy.
The principal may require a written statement by a physician when a pupil misses more than ten days during the school year because of illness.
Acceptable excuses for temporary absence from school may include the following:
1. Illness of student
2. Serious illness of a family member, which necessitates absence of the student
3. Death in immediate family
4. Special and recognized religious holidays regularly observed by followers of a particular faith
5. Other reasons approved by the principal or his designee
